Alt text writing checklist and composer

Choose what the image does in this page's context, then supply the details that matter. The composer assembles your words into an editable description. You can also prepare an empty alt attribute for a decorative image or describe a linked image's action.

For: Creators and small-business teams adding image descriptions to their website or social posts. Use it to: Draft image alt text from known details while accounting for context, essential text and link purpose.

Screenshot of the working alt-text composer with the supplied subject “A shop owner” and action “reviews a blank hours card at the counter,” producing that same description.

Write alt text for the image's purpose

Choose a purpose and enter the details you want the image description to preserve. Review the result before using it.

You supply the description. This tool does not inspect an image or invent missing details.

  • Describe the purpose in this page's context.
  • Keep essential image text available without the image.
  • For a complex chart or diagram, provide the necessary full explanation nearby and use alt text to identify it.

Start with the image's job

  • Useful visual information: describe the subject and the detail that helps explain this page.
  • Essential text: preserve the wording people need, rather than describing the appearance of the lettering.
  • Link or button: describe the destination or action, considering other text inside the same link.
  • Decorative or redundant: an empty alt attribute can be appropriate when the image adds no information in this context.

A description made from known details

In the example screenshot, the subject is “A shop owner” and the action is “reviews a blank hours card at the counter.” The composer combines those supplied words without inventing the shop's hours, a location or a result.

If important words appear in your actual image, add them in the essential-text field. The informative-image mode appends those words with a “Text shown” label. Edit the combined description for the context in which you will use it.

Review the result in its page context

  • Remove visual details that do not help explain the image's purpose.
  • Keep important information available without seeing the image.
  • For complex charts or diagrams, provide a fuller explanation nearby; a short alt field cannot replace that content.
  • Use the copy button or download a plain-text file, then add the result in your publishing tool's alt-text field.

You remain the author

This tool does not upload, inspect or recognize an image. It cannot decide whether a description fits content it has not seen. Its output is a drafting aid based on your entries, not a complete accessibility assessment.
