Local image compressor with actual file-size comparison

Choose a local image, set the maximum long edge and select JPEG or WebP. The preview shows the real exported file with its dimensions, format and byte count. If re-encoding makes the file larger, the result says so.

For: People preparing image assets for a website, email or social post. Use it to: Reduce an image’s dimensions or encoding quality and compare its actual file size.

Screenshot of the working local compressor using an original engineering illustration, with an 800-pixel maximum long edge, JPEG output and actual before-and-after byte counts.

Compress an image locally

Choose an image, adjust the maximum long edge and quality, then compare the actual byte counts. Download the version you prefer.

PNG, JPEG or WebP; up to 20 MiB and 25 million decoded pixels. Files stay in your browser. The image is never enlarged. Animated images become one still frame.

Smaller dimensions and lower quality can reduce file size. A re-encoded file can also be larger; compare the actual byte counts before choosing it.

Export preview

Choose your image and settings to see the export.

Your entered text and selected files stay in your browser.

Start with the dimensions you need

The maximum long edge keeps the image’s aspect ratio and never enlarges it. An 800-pixel setting produces an 800 × 800 image from the square example shown here; a wide image keeps its wider shape. Use the exported dimensions to check whether the file fits its destination.

Compare formats and quality

  • JPEG fills transparent areas with white. Use the preview to check edges and backgrounds.
  • WebP keeps transparency when this browser supports WebP export. If the browser falls back to PNG, the result shows the actual format and uses the matching filename extension.
  • Lower quality can reduce file size and visible detail. A re-encoded image can be larger than the source. Compare actual bytes and appearance rather than assuming savings.

File and output limits

Choose one PNG, JPEG or WebP up to 20 MiB and 25 million decoded pixels. The maximum long edge accepts whole numbers from 64 to 4096. Animated images become one still frame. The download contains re-encoded pixels; keep your original file separately.
